Chapter 12 – She’s Gone Far Away

Xu Ziling slowly opened his pair of eyes, the panoramic view of the tranquil Jingpo Lake under the brilliant spring sunshine opened up before his eyes.

Jingpo Lake might not be as colorful-with-many-postures [i.e. beautiful] as the water villages and the lakes in Jiangnan, but it carried the natural simplicity of the northeast prairie, with pure and unadulterated beauty revealed in the midst of the vast wilderness.

A flock of geese flitted across the surface of the lake, skimming the water and soaring into the sky, brimming with nature’s wild fun.

Shi Feixuan was gone!

He was not frustrated or depressed at all, instead, he felt an unprecedented fullness, his heart was filled with her gentle and soft taste, her fragrant breath was still haunting his tactile senses.

This was the first segment of love in his entire life.

There was no pledge of undying love, there was no whisper of sweet nothings to one another, yet he clearly sensed the taste of love that when the seas run dry and the stones go soft, this feeling would not change. Just like the bluish green waves and slightly swelling lake water before his eyes, the green duckweed and floating aquatic grasses, the wind-borne ripples, the white clouds lining the blue sky above. In itself it was already a scroll of an amazing and exquisitely touching painting.

Suddenly somebody’s head popped out of the water and swam toward him.

Xu Ziling was pulled back into reality. Focusing his eyes to see, he spoke in great surprise, “I didn’t know Xianhe Xiong have such interest in swimming leisurely in Jingpo Lake this early in the morning.”

Yin Xianhe, wearing dripping wet nightwalker outfit, leaped onto the shore, came to him, and copying him, he sat cross-legged in front of him. Smiling ruefully, he said, “Do I look like someone who loves to swim early in the morning?”

Noticing his spirit-weary-strength-exhausted look, Xu Ziling apologetically said, “I just woke up from regulating my breathing, my mind is not too clear yet. What happened? Ke Dazhi said that Yin Xiong is following Shen Mohuan’s track.”

Yin Xianhe replied, “I really wish I could tell Xu Xiong that fortunately I did not bring disgrace to myself by failing to carryout your order, but unfortunately the fact is not so; I even nearly lost my life. Where is Shaoshuai?”

Recalling what happened last night, Xu Ziling felt quite a sense of being reborn; he replied, “He and Ke Dazhi went out to look for you. Looks like their trip was in vain. What exactly happened?”

Yin Xianhe did not know that Funantuo has added injury upon injury on Kou Zhong, he thought that with him and Ke Dazhi around, Kou Zhong would be able to deal with anything. He thus said, “I acted according to plan, I found and followed the target’s tracks, all the way to outside the city. But now in retrospect, it was too easy. It is thus clear that the enemy intentionally laid down the trap.”

Shaken, Xu Ziling said, “Not good!”

Wiping the residual water on his face, Yin Xianhe said in astonishment, “Kou Zhong plus Ke Dazhi, we shouldn’t be worried about them!”

Smiling bitterly, Xu Ziling said, “Before last night, I would have the same thought as Yin Xiong, but if you knew about various misfortunes that we encountered last night, you would change your mind as well. Although Kou Zhong and I are injured, Funantuo certainly harmed us too seriously to believe. He made his move alone, but he nearly made the two of us losing our lives; we had to rely on Ke Dazhi to save us. But even he did not dare to go after the wounded Funantuo. From this, you could see how serious it is.”

The usually expressionless Yin Xianhe was emotionally moved; he said, “Funantuo finally made his move!”

Hard to dispel the worry from his face, Xu Ziling said, “What I am most afraid is that Xu Kaishan is making his move against them. I now have 80% confidence that Xu Kaishan is Da Zun. This person’s martial art skill might be at Shi Zhixuan’s level.”

Xie Wang Shi Zhixuan?” Yin Xianhe asked.

“You know Shi Zhixuan?” Xu Ziling asked in surprise.

Yin Xianhe nonchalantly replied, “This name, Shi Zhixuan, who in the world in the present time does not recognize? Who does not know it? The battle in Chang’an, Shi Zhixuan single-handedly fought the representatives of orthodox and demonic, two ways; it already made his name spread out all over the world. Those who know him for the first time now know that unexpectedly there is a figure in the world that can make both the White Way and the Demonic School afraid.”

Smiling wryly, Xu Ziling said, “This is perhaps what is called paper can’t wrap fire, or even when the eggs are put together so closely, they can still hatch chicks. But I wonder if Yin Xiong know the reason behind Shi Zhixuan’s battle in Chang’an?”

Yin Xianhe replied, “I am afraid not many people understand this aspect clearly. But I hear that at that time you guys were present.”

Remembering the Shi Zhixuan of last night, suddenly Xu Ziling’s whole body shook severely, divine light appeared suddenly in his mind.

Shi Zhixuan’s Bu Si Yin Fa was simply invincible, the world’s three grandmasters joining hands, although they could defeat him, but they could forget about killing him.

He only had one flaw.

This time Shi Feixuan walking on the dusty earth, her ultimate goal was naturally the hope that the world would be unified, that the common people would not have to suffer the disaster of war anymore. But her mission was also to target the ‘Demonic King’ Shi Zhixuan.

Bi Xiuxin and Shi Feixuan were Ci Hang Jingzhai’s most outstanding martial art masters of two different generations, and both have launched a struggle against Shi Zhixuan that was unprecedented in history. Currently, who gained the upper hand was still difficult to foresee. Although Bi Xiuxin was killed by Shi Zhixuan, but she gave birth to a daughter for him. Furthermore, she had caused him, due to excessive guilty conscience, to suffer split personality.

Shi Zhixuan singlehandedly facilitated the demise of the Great Sui. Last night he restored his power with the help of the Demonic Emperor’s Relics. However, Shi Feixuan, who had the nature of coumarouna odorata [蕙] and the heart of an orchid also found his only flaw.

Shi Zhixuan’s flaw was precisely Shi Qingxuan.

Even though he changed back to the killing-people-while-talking-and-laughing Shi Zhixuan just like before he met Bi Xiuxin, Shi Qingxuan was still his flaw, his only flaw.

Shi Feixuan has repeatedly mentioned Shi Qingxuan. It wasn’t like she wanted to play matchmaker to them, rather, she saw Shi Qingxuan’s importance in their struggle against Shi Zhixuan. Furthermore, she knew that it was not appropriate for her to interfere in the delicate relationship between Xu Ziling and Shi Qingxuan. As for how the eliminate Shi Zhixuan, perhaps Shi Feixuan herself did not have any firm plan. She was merely relying on her special premonition, which surpassed ordinary people, which made her vaguely feel that the subtle relationship between Xu Ziling and Shi Qingxuan might be the main crucial point in this matter. Shi Zhixuan ought to consider Xu Ziling as the man whom his daughter admired, hence the tour along the river channel in Chang’an and revealing the regret in his heart to Xu Ziling.

Therefore, not only she pointed directly to Xu Ziling that Shi Qingxuan was Shi Zhixuan’s only flaw, but she also pointed out that Shi Zhixuan might murder his own daughter. Before leaving, she urged him a thousand times, ten thousand times that he must not forget this matter.

She firmly decided to return to Jingzhai, it was actually some kind of action brimming with wisdom and self-sacrifice.

If they had succeeded in eliminating Shi Zhixuan the previous night, maybe she would have stayed to be his companion longer.

Ay!

These myriads of thought flashed through his mind at the speed of lightning or the spark from a flint, and finally it turned into a sigh.

Noticing his countenance alternating between clear and dark, and that the load on his mind was filling his heart, Yin Xianhe asked in astonishment, “What is Xu Xiong thinking?”

Xu Ziling mused that such a complex matter, even if he wanted to explain to Kou Zhong clearly, he would have to spend a lot of time and effort, not to mention Yin Xianhe had no clear understanding of the inside story. Changing the subject, he said, “This matter is hard to explain in a few words. Let’s talk about Yin Xiong’s bitter experience last night, shall we?”

Yin Xianhe gradually recovered from exhaustion, his spirit turned to the better, he said, “Last night I pursued Mu Ling and the others, along with their men, outside of the city. Following Ke Dazhi’s instructions, I dropped the thin scale sheets that can reflect the moonlight. Who would have thought that soon afterward, I was chased and attacked by more than a dozen masked enemies who followed my tail? Fortunately I am familiar with the terrain of this region, and thus I successfully got away by running toward the Jingpo Lake. This is precisely the case of the mantis stalks the cicada, unaware of the oriole behind [idiom from Daoist classic Zhuangzi: to pursue a narrow gain while neglecting a greater danger]. Not only I was unable to keep up with Mu Ling, I even nearly lost my life.”

If Kou Zhong were here, he would know that the enemy was able to see through their method of leaving traces by dropping the thin scale sheets, not only that, they even used it to lay down a death trap to deal with Kou Zhong and Ke Dazhi.

Drawing out a mouthful of cold air, Xu Ziling asked, “Could it be that they are the men from Du Xing’s side?”

Shaking his head, Yin Xianhe said, “I did not see Du Xing’s Ba Wang [hegemon] Axe; the only weapon style was chopping cavalry sword, the style is very much like the wolf bandits.”

“Wolf-bandits?” Xu Ziling asked.

Immediately he recalled that when he left the palace last night, Gongqi was waiting for Bai Ziting, who was sending them off to the Vermillion Bird Gate, for military conference, hence he was certain that Gongqi was not among the men who chased to kill Yin Xianhe.

But even after he explained it, Yin Xianhe was still convinced that he was right; he said, “I have done some research on these wolf-bandits; I believe that the possibility of these sneaky men are wolf-bandits is very high.”

After a short pause, he said, “What are we going to do now? I think whatever it is that was going to happen has already happened.”

Xu Ziling rose up to his full height. Suddenly feeling the cool breeze on his back, he realized that the clothes on his back were shattered. He said, “Let’s go back to the city to see the situation!”

The person who called him was the Pingyao merchant specializing in cloth, Cun Yi Gong’s Ou Liangcai and Yu Sheng Chang’s Luo Yi. Looking terrified, they pulled him aside to speak inside.

Luo Yi said, “The situation is not good, we must leave immediately.”

Astonished, Kou Zhong asked, “Bai Ziting is willing to let you go?”

Distressed, Ou Liangcai replied, “His men forced us to sign an IOU, we are eager to leave, we have no choice but to do what they want us to do.”

‘Ashamed!’ Kou Zhong cried inwardly. Were it not for he did not do his best, Luo Yi and the others would not have become other people’s meat and fish like this. Also, he recalled that if Jing Kang did not play ghost in the dark, they practically would not have come to Longquan. “Don’t worry,” he spoke with solemn expression, “I know the whereabouts of your goods. I am now going into the palace to see Bai Ziting to get justice for you. I wonder if two gentlemen could advise the others to peacefully wait for the news. I will come back to see you soon, I guarantee that you will be able to leave safely.”

Luo Yi dejectedly said, “Shaoshuai sees what is right and acts courageously [idiom from Analects], we are extremely grateful. But wealth is just something outside our bodies. We are people who go out to do business, we already anticipate unexpected losses and only pray for safety. We’d better just drop this matter at this point.”

Shocked, Kou Zhong said, “Currently the situation is chaotic, the road is not safe. You are Han people, plus you do not have the capability to protect yourselves, such a long and difficult trek back to Shanhai Pass, it is really unwise. Trust me! Give me a couple of sichen, I could also plead my Xiongdi Tuli to escort you back safely.”

Ou Liangcai pulled Luo Yi aside to talk privately. When they were back, Luo Yi said, “In that case, we’ll have to trouble Shaoshuai. But it would be best if you don’t use force. We are going back to wait for Shaoshuai’s good news; we’ll leave at noon.”

Kou Zhong mused that currently he did not have any qualifications to use force anyway, unless it was to help Xieli, Tuli to capture Longquan, which was not what he wanted at all.

After consoling the two men some more, he continued on his journey.

Xu Ziling and Yin Xianhe were hiding in the forest west of Longquan City, watching a group of nearly a thousand strong Mohe cavalry galloping out of the west gate, with hurried expression rushing toward the northwest. The leader was precisely the long-legged female general Zong Xianghua.

Yin Xianhe fixed his gaze on Zong Xianghua without blinking at all, his pair of eyes emitted a strange light.

Not paying attention to his expression, Xu Ziling knitted his brows and said, “Where are they going? The Black Wolf Army shouldn’t be here this quickly.”

Yin Xianhe was still unwilling to divert his gaze from sending off Zong Xianghua to the distance; he did not respond.

In the direction of the south gate, the city was crowded to bursting point with vehicles and horses leaving the city. This was to be expected, hence they were not surprised at all.

Suddenly Xu Ziling’s heart was moved, he said, “Do you still have the strength to run a couple more steps?”

Slightly startled, Yin Xianhe said, “Whatever it is that they are going to do, even if we could catch up with them, it’s hard for us to do anything; we will only chase after them with our spirit weary, our strength exhausted.”

Xu Ziling nodded in agreement, he said, “But I feel that this is an unusual matter, it’s going to be a pity if we let it slip by.”

“Very well!” Yin Xianhe replied, “It might have something to do with Shaoshuai, we could follow them from a distance to see what’s going on.”

Not daring to delay, the two flew out. Using the edge of the forest as their cover, they rushed at top speed.

Kou Zhong arrived at the Vermilion Bird Gate. The civilian minister Kesubie, who also received him in the past, was waiting respectfully for his good self’s arrival. He spoke politely and courteously, “Xiufang Dajia is waiting for Shaoshuai at the west garden of the inner palace. Da Wang ordered me to await your gracious presence and show the way.”

Kou Zhong was well aware of what’s going on. On the surface Kesubie was receiving the visitor, but actually he was watching to make sure Kou Zhong was leaving Longquan. Since they could not kill him, they had no choice but to send him off like a plague [orig. 瘟神 (wen shen), demon personifying pestilence].

Last time it was also this well-versed-in-letters-and-military-technology man representing Bai Ziting to receive him. Evidently, even if he might not be Bai Ziting’s trusted aide, he must be someone that Bai Ziting have confidence in, also, he must have certain ability.

Leading him into the King City, seemingly casually, Kesubie asked, “Why didn’t I see Xu Gongzi coming along?”

Having the load on his mind touched by him, Kou Zhong’s internal organs tightened, but on the surface he did not dare to reveal any emotion. He said, “He knew I was going to see Xiufang Dajia, hence he did not want to come with me. Ha! I wonder if I could see Da Wang for a moment, because there are a hundred thousand urgent matters that I need to consult with him.”

Putting on a fake smile, Kesubie said, “What a coincidence! Da Wang wished to speak to Shaoshuai as well, to see if we could get back something that belongs to us.”

Kou Zhong shivered inwardly; he had a faint feeling that the turn of events was not too encouraging. Just by looking at Kesubie’s expression, he knew that Bai Ziting had some other bargaining chip, so Kou Zhong definitely could not gain the upper hand.

Kesubie took him passing through the moon gate of the side garden inside the palace. Pointing to an elegant bungalow under the shade of dense flowers and trees, he said, “Xiufang Dajia is over there. Shaoshuai, please!”

A small squad of men and horses separated themselves from the main body of the Mohe army traveling at high speed toward the northwest, and galloped to the northeast. The route they were taking was the sparse forest area. If Xu Ziling and Yin Xianhe were following closely at the tail of the troops, perhaps they would be fooled. But because they were following far behind, plus they were advancing along the sparse forest region, they heard the sound of hoof beats of this small group leaving the main army coming from afar instead.

Xu Ziling leaped onto the top of a tree to look into the distance. To his surprise, he saw Zong Xianghua was unexpectedly among these more than a dozen riders. Leaping down to the ground, he cheerfully said, “This is called if you don’t want anyone to know, don’t do it [idiom]. There must be something extraordinary, otherwise, with the Tujue main forces pressing down on their territory, how could Zong Xianghua have spare time to do something else?”

Yin Xianhe was a master in tracking. After listening carefully, he said, “If I am not mistaken, they must be going in the direction of Xiao Longquan [little Longquan] by the Bohai Sea, which is the biggest harbor in Longquan’s vicinity, the most important strategic coastal defense town. What is Zong Xianghua doing in there?”

Xu Ziling laughed and said, “If we follow them and take a look, won’t everything be very clear?”

Yin Xianhe’s pair of eyes emitted strange expression that Xu Ziling found it hard to fathom. He nodded and said, “Let me, this old horse who knows the way home [idiom] lead the way! I guarantee she won’t detect our presence.”

  1. Akolaw, I’d like to see loose ends being resolved one by one. At this point of the story, there are still too many. Half, it’s宝瓶 (bao ping), same words for Aquarius (constellation). Anurman, it was too long for my liking. HPC, you are welcome. Pao, good job, as usual. Willy, for me, readers’ input can be categorized as substance and style. Substance is content, including typographical errors on the original Chinese text. Style is just preference or different interpretation of the same text. While I try to fix the former, I don’t care much about the latter. Besides, like I mentioned before, I am translating a fiction, not scripture or technical article. No one is going to be hurt if my translation is not 100% accurate (I don’t believe there is such thing as translation work that is 100% accurate anyway). Darth, isn’t Tian Mo Ce Yin Gui Pai’s?

    1. It is very difficult to translate Eastern Oriental languages into English, and retain all the nuances. This is why keeping many things is Hanyu Pinyin, especially for martial arts skills or sect names, is better. Honestly, a noun is a noun, you just need to correlate the noun to its meaning.

So guys, Foxs has done a stellar job at translation, especially with all the idioms. Having the MEANING of the phrase is good enough, instead of more “accurate” or “literal” translations.

Please give Foxs a break over translation stuff…

  2. Thanks Foxs… It’s a calm chapter before another storm. I hope we’ll get another fights 😀.

Will we never see Shi Feixuan again for the rest of the story? I don’t really feel sad about it. She was so annoying since the beginning of the story, altough less annoying in last few books.

  3. Thanks Foxs, for the great translation. I wonder what is going on with Yin Xianhe? There’s a lot of mystery to this man and his actions and conduct are peculiar—I don’t know why the boys trust him so implicitly too, but maybe that’s just my perspective.

I’m waiting for the day that the boys will soon recover and they, along with Ba Fenghan, can rampage through their opponents. There have been so many too notch opponents that their fame has soared (especially with KZ’s latest victory). This combined with the battle the boys fought off an army in a city has been truly outstanding.

Also, as much as I respect KDZ now, I want to see him and KZ go at it to see who is the best sabre master of this generation!

  4. Tian Mo Ce is the original “Holy Text/Manual” of the Demonic Sects. It’s the one that originally had 10 parts, and some of them were lost over the years. It’s also one of the Four Legendary Books – Tian Mo Ce, Chang Shen Jue (Secret of Long Life), Ci Hang Jian Dian (Sword Canon) and the Zhan Shen something (can’t remember the name, you translated all these back when the boys were first told of who Shi Feixuan is)

While I’ve never read much Huang Yi novels, including Da Tang, I do know that Tian Mo Ce, and the Demonic Sect’s efforts to combine the books back together (and reunite all the Demonic Sects) is a recurring theme throughout many of his linked novels. Hou Xibai has also mentioned this, in response to the two boy’s questions on Shi Zhixuan’s aspirations for him during the Chang’an arc.

Anyway, I never understood the part about only 6 volumes of Tian Mo Ce being passed on to the current generation…….as from the novel so far, we already know 8 of them…..

    1. Dao Xin Zhong Mo Da Fa – Xie Yi Zong (Xiang Yutian, which no one mastered for generations)
    2. Tian Mo Da Fa – Yin Gui Pai (Zhu Yuyan and Wanwan)
    3. Hua Jian 12 Zhi – Hua Jian Pai (Hou Xibai)
    4. Huan Ying Jian Fa – Bu Tian Ge (Yang Xuyan, aka Phantom Sword Technique)
    5. Gui Hun 18 Claws – Mo Xiang Zong (Zhao Deyan)
    6. Zi Qi Tian Luo – Mie Qing Dao (Xi Ying, which no one mastered for generations, till Xi Ying)
    7. Tian Xin Lian Huan – Tian Lian Zong (An Long, which no one mastered for generations, till An Long.)
    8. Jian Gang Tong Liu – Zhen Chuan Dao (divided into the 2 parts and sects of Laojun Guan – Pi Chen, implied to be Ren Bing Jian Fa, and Dao Zu Zhen Chuan – Zuo Youxian , Zi Wu Gang)

I actually know the big picture of the linked Huang Yi novels with regards to this overarching Tian Mo Ce-related story arc, so I know the names of the final 2 volumes, but I won’t provide any spoilers by naming them here.

Since I know for certain that “someone” will “rediscover” and master one of the 2 missing ones in this novel, and continue on in subsequent novels. Naming the skills will provide a huge clue on who is the one who succeeded in doing it……..

Of these 8, the only one that’s probably really “lost”, is Dao Xin Zhong Mo Da Fa, due to Xiang Yutian’s intentions prior to his death.

So yeah, I have no idea why they keep saying that only 6 volumes were passed down……

      1. The only Huang Yi novel I’ve read is ASITP. But anyway, there’s a “prequel” to Da Tang starring Xiang Yutian in his younger days. No idea if the timeline there overlaps with Da Tang though.

I would definitely like to read the stories of how Yue Shan and Lu Miaozi knew the Demonic Sect people, and why Lu Miaozi was so close to Xiang Yutian, to the extent that he gave the Demonic Emperor Relic to him, and also constructed the bat cave temple for him to train Dao Xin Zhong Mo Da Fa in seclusion

  6. The love experience of Fei and Xu and the return to Hui

    My view on Fei

Fei set the tone , this is pure spiritual love, set the time limit, this would end once they left the place, and invite Xu to join, and eventually leave to end the experience.

Why did she want to do that?

Fei is going back to a life long retreat, before that, she want/need to experience the mundane world, this is of course important to her path since life experience is importance.

This fall in love and end the love experience is important to her realization of hui/ voidness, in another word, she use her wisdom sword of cut off her love bonding.

Xu is her lover and grind stone of her wisdom sword.

  7. Love experience of Fei and Xu and return to Hui/ voidness

Xu is the passive one here, and I would like to compare him with Zhu,

Zhu fall in love with Shi, she go against instruction of her school to have sexual relationship with Shi, and after this relationship end she turn angry, this reflect her greed and anger and the root of these is delusion.

the fourth refinement is refine hui to mingle with tao which is the taoist version of enter into nirvana, Greed, Anger and Delusion is what block one to enter into nirvana and Zhu never rise to realize Hui and become a grand master.

Now we look at Xu’s case, Xu fall in love , he know that Fei want to pursue her goal let her go (non attachment) when it end, he thing of her is grateful and feel she is considerate ( no angry). He enjoy his love relationship with a sense of voidness /maturity/ wisdom. (No delusion).

Xu took no action and cross the pass.

Fei is the proof that Xu arise to return to Hui.

  8. Thank you foxs and ako-xiong 🙂

Thank you as well darth-xiong for the very enriching background information. The book you were looking for was War God Catalog (Book 10 Chapter 6).

I disagree with #4 on your list [4. Huan Ying Jian Fa – Bu Tian Ge (Yang Xuyan, aka Phantom Sword Technique)].

Book 24 Chapter 6 explains that Hou Xibai’s Hua Jian Pai and Yang Xuyan’s Bu Tian Ge are polar opposites and that Bu Tian Ge “acts on behalf of heaven”. Shi Zhixuan’s genius was in fusing 1 demonic martial art and 1 orthodox martial art, therefore if Hou Xibai is his disciple for his demonic martial art, Yang Xuyan must be his disciple for his orthodox martial art. Shi Zhixuan could not have had more than 1 volume of the Tian Mo Ce otherwise he would have had too big of an advantage over all the other demonic sect practitioners. Even Xiang Yutian and Zhu Yuyan who were ranked higher than him only had 1 volume each!

You Niaojuan was mentioned in Book 24 Chapter 5 as being one of The Eight Major Martial Art Masters of the Demonic Way. You Niaojuan should be #4 instead of Yang Xuyan.

I’m also curious as to which volume of Tian Mo Ce Yue Shan practiced because he too is a practitioner of Demonic/Heretical Sect. Same for Ding Jiuzhong, Jin Huanzhen, and Zhou Laotan who were named in Book 20 Chapters 5 and 6 as the practitioners of the 4 major demonic schools of heretical skill and strange technique

Ako-xiong also hinted at Xiang Yutian being the hero of another novel in his comments to Book 36 Chapter 3 maybe in that book we get to see more about the previous generation? I’d also love to hear more about the stories behind Zhu Yuyan, Yue Shan, Song Que, Huang Gongcuo, Li Yuan, Lu Miaozi, Shi Zhixuan, Bi Xiuxin (Ci Hang Jing Zhai), Fan Qinghui (Ci Hang Jing Zhai), Shan Meixian (Dong Ming Pai), Shang Qingya (Flying Horse Ranch).

    Book 24 Chapter 6
Hou Xibai halted his steps and looked around; he spoke in heavy voice, “Sometimes I suspect that Shi Shi is a person with dual personalities, all because Hua Jian Pai and Bu Tian Ge, two sects’ martial art xinfa are polar opposite, each one goes to the extreme. For Bu Tian, capturing the heaven is not enough; hence they act on behalf of the heaven, by specializing in assassination and murder, the more chaotic the world the better, fetching the generals seizing the commanders, to regard the magnificent army with thousands of men and horses as nothing. Early on I already suspected that Yang Xuyan is Bu Tian Ge disciple, but I just received the confirmation from Xu Xiong’s mouth! Bu Tian Ge pays no attention to comradeship; everything is just a tool for them, a vast difference from our Hua Jian Pai’s embracing the scriptures and the ways of the world, losing oneself in the white cloud. Ay! It’s bad!”

    Book 24 Chapter 5
Listening to that, Xu Ziling’s heart grew cold. Seizing this opportunity, he asked, “The Eight Major Martial Art Masters of the Demonic Way, aside from Zhu Yuyan, Shi Zhixuan, An Long, Pi Chen, Zuo Youxian and You Niaojuan, six persons, who are the other two?” Cao Yinglong replied, “There’s one that I know, which is the Eastern Tujue Xieli Khan’s Junshi Zhao Deyan. Within the demonic schools, this man has lofty status; he is revered as the ‘Mo Shuai’ [Demonic Commander]. His demonic skill is extremely outstanding, barely second only to Zhu Yuyan and Shi Zhixuan. As for the last person, his identity is very mysterious. One time Shi Zhixuan inadvertently leaked out that this person was cultivating some kind of formidable gongfa in secret, but he did not say who.”

    Book 20 Chapter 6
It is rare that the direct disciples of Nixing Pai [lit. going the wrong way, ‘Pai’ is usually translated as ‘Sect’], Bawang Gu [lit. hegemon valley], Chishou Jiao [lit. scarlet hands, ‘Jiao’ is usually translated as ‘Cult’] and Meihuo Zong [lit. bewitching school], these four major demonic schools of heretical skill and strange technique meet together in one place.

    Book 10 Chapter 6
Delighted, Lu Miaozi said, “Speaking with you, I can save a lot of time. ‘Celestial Devil Secret’, the ‘Sword Canon’, the ‘Secret to Long Life’ and the enigmatic ‘War God Catalog’ put together are known as the Four Masterpieces of the Ancient and Modern times. Each book contains secrets about life and the universe throughout all ages. How could they be that easy to unlock?” “War God Catalog?” the two boys asked in unison. Lu Miaozi said, “That is probably the most elusive among the Four Masterpieces. Although subsequent generations have orally passed on the legend about this book, nobody has ever seen it for real. I am not too clear on the details myself, so don’t ask me.”

    1. My order is just arbitrary, not in terms of ranking. Do you seriously think that Zhao Deyan will lose to Hou Xibai or Yang Xuyan in a full blown fight, if my order was a real ranking?

Bu Tian Ge is undoubtedly one of the Tian Mo Ce-offshoot Demonic Sects. As akolaw also reiterated below, the power of Bu Si Yin Fa revolves around it being TWO of the Tian Mo Ce volumes, being diametrically opposite (as mentioned by Hou Xibai), and FUSED together using the Buddhist arts that Shi Zhixuan gained from 2 of the 4 Holy Monks. That’s why Hou Xibai mentioned that the Scroll would only be beneficial to him and Yang Xuyan. For both of them, it’s like starting on 2 different ends, and progressing towards the middle. Without starting from either Hua Jian 12 Zhi or Huan Yin Jian Fa, you won’t be able to master Bu Si Yin Fa, and can only study the brilliance of it from a bystander’s POV (like what Bi Xiuxin and Shi Feixuan did).

To digress a small bit about Bu Si Yin Fa. In most martial arts novels, including this one, the pinnacle of martial arts revolves around a few basic concepts – Tian Ren He Yi (Harmony between Heaven and Earth, or literally, Heaven and Earth As One), Yin Yang Hei Xie (Harmony between Soft and Hard, or Combining Yin and Yang Energies), and Wu Zhao Sheng You Zhao (No Technique Trumps Technique).

Tian Ren He Yi in Da Tang is effectively the pinnacle of Ci Hang Jian Dian. The 2nd highest level, Xin You Ling Xi, is effectively “Ren Jian He Yi”, or Sword and Man Becoming One. The highest level, Jian Xin Tong Ming, means you have successfully elevated yourself one level up to achieve harmony between heaven and earth. A bit like achieving Nirvana.

Yin Yang He Xie in Da Tang effectively explains why the 2 boys are UNBEATABLE when they combine powers. Due to personality and influence differences, both boys went on separate paths when they trained the Secret to Long Life. Kou Zhong is the Yin Energy guy, and Ziling is the Yang Energy guy. When they fight together, they achieve Yin Yang He Xie……

Wu Zhao Sheng You Zhao is what many top pugilists have mentioned, which the boys have now achieved. When your martial arts skills are high enough, you are able to turn complexity into something simple. And have multiple changes within 1 single “simple move”.

At the end of the day, all martial arts in all martial art novels are trying to achieve the above 3 levels. The only difference is in HOW the specific martial arts get there. This is why there’s a saying that “at the pinnacle, all martial arts are the same”.

Bu Si Yin Fa is OP as it uses 3 different martial arts to achieve a unique version of Yin Yang Hei Xie (by combining life and death), and I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s almost, or effectively at the level of Tian Ren He Yi too……

You Niaojuan is nothing more than the strongest disciple of Xiang Yutian. He might be ranked on the list, but always at the bottom. The fact that Shi Zhixuan killed him with a single blow speaks a lot. I suspect his presence on the rankings has more to do with the rest giving respect to Xie Yi Zong, and Xiang Yutian, more than anything else….

Also, note that the 8 Demonic Cult Master list isn’t exactly reflective of the 8 Demonic Sects, as it separated Pi Chen and Zuo Youxian, who are offshoots of the same school, and combines Hua Jian Pai and Bu Tian Ge, in Shi Zhixuan. This added to the boys’ confusion in the earlier stages of the novel.

Yue Shan is not a real Demonic Cult member. He has nothing to do with Tian Mo Ce. I would phrase it as he was associated with the Demonic Cult members, because of his tyrannical and overbearing ways. You can translate “Ba Dao” as Tyrannical Sabre or Overbearing Sabre. It simply means that he was a “might is right” guy and a person with scant regards for others. He also famously had a very bad temper. One can imagine what he was like when he was angry (and with very high martial arts….) He is not exactly “demonic” per se, but no saint himself. The best analogy would be to compare him with Jin Yong’s Huang Yaoshi. “Eastern Heretical”, but hardly really “evil” or “demonic”.

He, like Lu Miaozi, knew all the top pugilists of their era, which would naturally included the top Demonic Sect masters. You wouldn’t exactly call Lu Xiaozi demonic either right? All because his personality wasn’t as overbearing as Yue Shan? Although both of them were probably equally arrogant and aloof…….

  9. Pao xiong,

Both Hua Jian Pai and Bu Tian Ge are polar opposite, Hua Jian as artist/foreign relation seek life in every situation while Bu Tian as assassin/secret agent seek to assault and kill.

Both are Mor Mon Sects (of which Shi is head), since he cannot cope with the two opposite xin fa, he add Buddhist xin fa as middle link. (Buddhist view is Middle way view), thus when HY describe Shi’s art he use death qi life qi etc.

  10. Darth-xiong and ako-xiong again thank you for the lively discussion, I’ve missed having this level of energy here since spcnet 🙂

I’m kinda getting what you guys are saying, but here are some points I don’t understand:

    1. Why yin yang cannot mean 1 orthodox and 1 demonic/heretical hence the difficulty in fusing them?

    2. Why is Yang Xuyan never mentioned by any of the demonic sect characters as one of them–could it be because he is from orthodox school? [can we agree that Hou Xibai is worldly so like Kou is Yin; whereas Yang Xuyan is lofty so like Xu is Yang?]

    3. Also if Shi Zhixuan had 2 volumes why was Xiang Yutian still considered superior when he had just 1 volume?

    1. 1, Da Tang is more complex , there are Yin Yang in both orthodox school and demonic school so they are self complete.

In fact if we look at Kou, he is an outgoing Yang character boy, and what attracted him is the cool Yin practice, and Xu an inward looking hermit to be, he was attracted by the fire Yang practice, they are self completed with Yin Yang by themselves.

This is closer to Taoist yin yang theory and if you look at the diagram of tai chi, the black side (yin) have a white dot (Yang) and the White side (Yang) also have a Black dot(Yin), meaning there is yin in the Yang part and yang in the Yin part.

2, Yang Xuyan, his part of story is not finished.
2.1, Saint Mon’s structure is like a court. ( Chinese view the heaven deities operate like a court, so it is call tian ting / heaven court ) Pu Tian is the secret agent/assassin so he is always hiding and when he show up he is giving his killer strike, while Hua Jian is the artist/ foreign relation department, so he should go out make friends and make others like him.

3, There may be internal struggle between different sects but Saint Di is the superior leader and every sect leader should obey him ( when he is in full power, and isn’t this true in China or north of the great wall)

Saint di Xiang is the grand leader, he only focus on spiritual path, and left routine business to other sect leader, while each have their own volume of teaching, Yin Gui is Saint Mon’s house keeper/Secretary should keep a copy of all volume, while Tao Xin Chong Mor (Saint Mon’s highest practice that led to nirvana) is unique for Saint Di and Xiang keep it by his side, so out of Yin Gui ‘s collection. Under his watch nobody dare to go too far, that is why the struggle between orthodox school and Mor Moon is so civilized and not an all out war. With him disappear, things begin to go out of control.

    2. Pao, I think you’re very confused, and I will try to clear up as much of your confusion as I can.

      1. Yin Yang is Soft and Hard, or Hot and Cold, 2 different kinds of energy. It’s linked to the Taichi Symbol. Yin Yang He Xie is one of the means of achieving universal harmony.

Your statement about Hou Xibai being worldly means he’s Yin and Yang Xuyan being loft means he’s Yang, merely shows how confused you are. It’s about the type of internal energy you are using, which may, or may not be influenced by personality.

A more complete description of Yin, would be Yin Rou, which clearly describes the “soft” part of the internal energy. Examples of famous Yin martial arts in novels include Jiu Yin White Bone Claws, and much of Huang Yaoshi’s Peach Island martial arts (including Tan Zhi Shen Tong).

A more complete description of Yang, would be Yang Gang, which clearly describes the “hard” part of the internal energy. Examples of famous Yang martial arts in novels include Xiang Long 18 Palms.

However, I would caution against having the idea that having a fierce, powerful and overbearing martial arts naturally means that it’s a Yang martial arts. Think of it this way. Many of Kou Zhong’s sabre moves from the Eight Methods of the Well are fierce, powerful and overbearing……BUT powered by Yin internal energy.

As a final point, I think it was Yuwen Wudi, when fighting the boys in the early days, he received a blow from one of them first, and realised that it was of (either Yin or Yang) type, and incorrectly thought that the other one, being of the same school, would be using similar internal energy, and hence got injured when he was unprepared to face the other type of energy and he was finally repelled by a combined attack from the 2 boys, combining 2 different types of energy.

In one of the more recent fights (can’t remember which one), Ziling also intentionally used Kou Zhong’s Yin energy to trick his opponent, before reverting to his usual Yang energy. This implies that the Secret of Long Life is a perfect Yin Yang manual, and the “usual” energy that each of the boys use, is just a personality thing. Both of them can probably use both types of energy, just not simultaneously.

      2. Yin Yang has NOTHING to do with the ORIGIN of your martial arts, orthodox or heretical. As I mentioned, in all martial art novels, at the pinnacle, it’s all the same, revolving around those 3 universal principles. What differs is HOW the practitioner got there. Much of the difference revolves around xin fa, and the way they channel/move energy within their body to produce the force needed to power their techniques/stances.

A classic example of this is in Tian Long Ba Bu, where Jiumozhi used Taoist internal strength from Xiao Wu Xiang Gong (if I remember correctly), to power Buddhist martial arts (the various skills he stole from Shaolin Temple.

This is also the reason why Wanwan was so interested in “examining” Ziling’s energy flow closely after he was injured by Hou Xibai on the bridge while entering Chengdu. Likewise, Ning Daoqi said that the exchange of blows he had with Kou Zhong, gave him new understanding and benefit from feeling how Kou Zhong moved his energy about.

So can you fuse orthodox and heretical martial arts together? YES. That’s exactly what Bu Si Yin Fa is – 2 demonical/heretical martial arts diametrically opposite in nature, “bridged” or fused by orthodox Buddhist martial arts.

      3. Why is Yang Xuyan never mentioned? Very simple, cos no one knows he’s the Bu Tian Ge successor, in the same way that no one knew that Hou Xibai was the Hua Jian Pai successor. Hou Xibai only realised who Yang Xuyan really was, after talking to the boys. Wanwan exchanged blows with Hou Xibai in Luoyang and never “realised” that a Yin Gui Pai disciple exchanged blows with a Hua Jian Pai disciple.

Probably, only a relatively senior Demonic Sect person, like Zhu Yuyan, who knew Shi Zhixuan from the early days where he was just the Hua Jian Pai successor, would be able to recognise Hua Jian Pai internal energy and stances at a glance.

      4. As for your last question, I think you’re asking the wrong question. Your question should be – if Tian Mo Mi (Yin Gui Pai’s part of Tian Mo Ce, powering Tian Mo Da Fa), is considered to have “much of the most important essence” of Tian Mo Ce, hence Zhu Yuyan’s position at the “head” of the 8 Demonic Sect Masters, then why is Dao Xin Zhong Mo Da Fa so special that it elevates Xiang Yutian (despite failing to fully master it) to being on par with her?

Zhu Yuyan was ahead of Shi Zhixuan because even after mastering both Hua Jian 12 Zhi and Huan Yin Jian Fa, he was still inferior to Zhu Yuyan. It was only till he created Bu Si Yin Fa, that he elevated himself above her, which Zhu Yuyan herself admitted prior to her death. So it’s not a simple thing of 2>1.

I don’t have the answer to my own question though. Perhaps the Xiang Yutian story will explain this part in greater detail….

      5. Last but not least, you need to always remember that orthodox and heretical is all a matter of PERSPECTIVE and PHILOSOPHY. Especially in the way Huang Yi applied it in this novel. You can go reread Ziling’s conversations with Zhu Yuyan on the motivations of the Demonic Sects and how they were simply the “losing philosophy” during the rise of Confucianism, and were persecuted for hundreds of years since.

Also, when you master Dao Xin Zhong Mo Da Fa, your personality changes “back to orthodox”, so……..

      6. I’ll leave you with an explanation of this philosophy thing. The Chinese San Zi Jing (Three Character Classic) starts with the line “Ren Zhi Chu, Xing Ben Shan”, which means that Man was born Good. That is one philosophy. The opposing philosophy is “Ren Zhi Chu, Xing Ben Er”, which means that Man was born Evil.

The philosophical difference between these two are the difference between orthodox and heretical. Mainly a different approach to doing things, and a different outlook in life.

So yeah, from a martial arts point of view, once again, at the pinnacle, it all ends up the same, regardless of orthodox or heretical. The 3 basic martial arts principles that I spelled out applies.
